Lawn aeration can help homeowners achieve a healthier, more resilient yard, according to an April 9 guide that details the benefits and methods of aerating lawns. The process involves creating small holes in the soil to relieve compaction, allowing water, nutrients, and oxygen to reach grass roots.
The guide explains that aeration is important because compacted soil prevents proper absorption of essential elements needed for lawn growth. This can lead to poor drainage, thinning grass, and increased vulnerability to stress. By loosening the soil through aeration, roots are able to grow deeper and stronger.
There are several types of lawn aeration methods discussed in the guide: core (or plug) aeration is considered most effective for relieving severe compaction; spike aeration creates holes without removing soil but may further compact surrounding areas; liquid aeration uses chemicals or biological agents to improve soil structure but is generally less effective than core methods. Core aerators remove plugs of soil using hollow tines with options ranging from manual tools suitable for small lawns to motorized machines or tow-behind models for larger areas.
The timing of lawn aeration depends on grass type. Cool-season grasses benefit most from early fall or spring treatment while warm-season varieties should be addressed in late spring or early summer during their active growth periods. After completing core aeration—ideally achieving 20-40 holes per square foot—homeowners should leave removed plugs on the surface where they will decompose within weeks. This period also presents an opportunity for overseeding or applying fertilizer since exposed soil enhances seed-to-soil contact.
