Airbnb announced that searches for properties in college football towns increased nearly 130% over Labor Day weekend. Guests are also favoring listings in categories such as amazing views and cabins.

According to Airbnb, the surge in college football town searches indicates a growing trend where travelers are combining major events, such as football games, with unique stays in nearby Airbnb properties. The trend emphasizes the appeal of “event-cations,” where guests use Airbnb’s Categories feature to find listings that enhance their event experience, such as properties with amazing views or cabins.

Cities renowned for their college football traditions are seeing significant spikes in search activity. For example, searches in Gainesville, Florida, have surged over 1,600 percent as fans prepare to support the Gators, with many booking stays featuring amenities like amazing pools. Similarly, College Station, Texas, has seen a 180 percent increase in searches, with guests opting for tiny homes to enjoy a cozy football experience. Columbia, South Carolina, has experienced a nearly 200 percent rise, with visitors choosing accommodations near national parks to combine their game-day excitement with outdoor activities.

The economic impact of college football games extends beyond local tourism, contributing significantly to local economies. According to Airbnb’s press release, college football events can inject as much as $1.5 million into a host city’s economy during game weekends, benefiting small businesses and restaurants. In 2023, Airbnb guests in the US spent an average of $210 per day on local attractions and businesses, including $65 on restaurants.
