This summer, Airbnb has observed a significant increase in travelers searching for listings near pools, lakes, or beaches as Labor Day approaches. In response to this growing interest in waterfront properties, the company has introduced a new feature aimed at educating guests about water safety.
The new in-app experience provides expert-developed water safety tips after a guest books a listing with a pool or proximity to water. The feature also suggests questions that guests can ask their hosts regarding the property’s water safety protections and considerations. These prompts address topics such as available safety equipment, access points to pools or waterfront areas, and specific rules or hazards related to water at the listing.
Airbnb collaborated with Safe Kids Worldwide—a member of its Trust and Safety Advisory Coalition—to develop these educational tips. The guidance includes general advice on preventing incidents and steps guests should take before entering the water.
Tara Bunch, Airbnb Global Head of Operations, stated: “While water safety incidents during stays in Airbnb listings are incredibly rare, we want guests to feel confident and prepared. This new product is designed to help them stay informed and feel better equipped to keep themselves and their loved ones safe around water.”
Safe Kids Worldwide President Torine Creppy added: “Drowning can happen quickly and silently, without the dramatic signs of thrashing or calling for help—yet it’s entirely preventable. One of the most important things a family can do when vacationing near water is to discuss and make a water safety plan before they leave. That’s why we’re excited to partner with Airbnb to help families get the information and resources they need to support that planning, and ensure when they get to their destination, kids are staying safe while having fun.”
The new initiative builds on previous efforts by Airbnb to inform guests about potential risks at properties with features like pools or hot tubs. Hosts have long been asked to disclose important details such as whether there is protective gating or locks for these amenities.
Additionally, Airbnb has conducted pool safety campaigns with organizations like Safe Kids Worldwide over several years. In the United States, it partners with companies offering discounted pool fences for hosts; according to CDC data cited by Airbnb, proper fencing can reduce a child’s risk of drowning by 83 percent.
