Airbnb announced on Apr. 6 that hosts and guests using its platform have generated approximately $17.3 billion in tourism taxes for communities worldwide since 2014, with about $13.5 billion of that total coming from the United States.

The company said these funds help local governments address budget shortfalls by supporting critical services such as police, infrastructure, and libraries. In 2025 alone, Airbnb stays in the US accounted for around $2.7 billion in tourism taxes collected and remitted to state and local authorities.

According to Airbnb, it has supported legislative efforts to streamline tax collection processes through laws like Louisiana’s HB 374 and Maryland’s SB 979, which allow short-term rental platforms to collect and remit taxes on behalf of hosts. The company said this approach simplifies tax collection for cities, towns, and counties that charge hotel occupancy or accommodation taxes.

“Since 2014, we have advocated for solutions that allow short-term rental platforms to collect and remit tourism taxes on behalf of hosts,” the statement reads. “In challenging economic environments, the economic benefits of travel generated through Airbnb has proven significant and enduring.” The company added: “By remitting billions in tourism taxes and partnering with communities to streamline tax collection, we continue to work with public sector partners to maximize the full economic potential of hosting and travel in communities around the world.”

Airbnb enables hosts to share homes and local experiences with millions of travelers according to its official website. It operates as a marketplace connecting guests with hosts across more than 220 countries and regions according to its official website. The platform offers various lodging options including entire homes, private rooms, unique venues as well as experiences such as cooking classes or guided tours according to its official website.

The company’s origins trace back to renting air mattresses in an apartment according to its official website. Today it serves a global community by providing accommodations beyond traditional hotels according to its official website.
