Earlier today, Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, announced that Jason Buechel will assume expanded responsibilities as Vice President of Amazon Worldwide Grocery Stores while maintaining his role as CEO of Whole Foods Market. Buechel will join the Stores Leadership Team and report directly to Herrington.

Buechel has been with Whole Foods Market since 2013. Before becoming CEO, he served as Chief Operating Officer, overseeing operations in all physical stores and managing technology, supply chain and distribution, store real estate and design, and human resources functions. Under his leadership as CEO, Whole Foods Market achieved record sales growth and expanded to over 535 locations.

Herrington noted that Claire Peters and Anand Varadarajan would report to Buechel moving forward. Since the creation of a single Worldwide Grocery Stores organization in 2022, significant progress has been made toward simplifying grocery shopping for customers. Efforts have been made to integrate the vast grocery selection across Amazon’s logistics network to enhance customer experience.

The company is also focusing on new initiatives like the Grocery Subscription service and redesigned Amazon Fresh stores. Experiments such as those in Phoenix allow customers to shop for groceries alongside millions of other products available on Amazon.com for delivery within hours.

Claire Peters will continue her role leading Amazon Fresh, Amazon Go, and Grocery Partnerships. Anand Varadarajan will maintain his position leading product and technology for Worldwide Grocery Stores.

Herrington expressed confidence in Buechel’s leadership capabilities: “Jason will be a fantastic leader to take the team forward and deliver on the solid 2025 plans the team has built.”
