Amazon recently marked its 30th anniversary by highlighting its significant economic contributions to the United States. In 2024, the company introduced new generative AI technologies, such as Amazon Nova and Trainium2 chips, and invested in nuclear energy projects. Additionally, Amazon’s Disaster Relief efforts provided support to communities affected by natural disasters.

The company also made a substantial investment of $2.2 billion in pay and benefits for U.S. fulfillment and transportation network employees. This increased the average base wage for hourly front-line workers to more than $22 per hour, with total compensation averaging over $29 per hour when benefits are included.

Since 2010, Amazon has directly invested over $1 trillion in U.S. operations and cloud infrastructure while creating more than 1 million jobs nationwide. Notably, more than 40% of Amazon’s workforce is based in small towns across America.

Research by Oxford Economics highlighted the positive impact of an Amazon fulfillment center in Wilmington, Delaware, noting that it “…revived a shuttered work location and created quality employment opportunities for local workers.” Furthermore, nearly half of those hired for logistics roles were previously unemployed.

The Progressive Policy Institute ranked Amazon as the top Investment Hero in 2023 due to its substantial investments in the U.S., surpassing all other American companies. The company also ranks among the largest spenders on research and development each year.

In terms of tax contributions for 2024, Amazon reported:

– $9 billion in current federal income tax expense
– $6.2 billion in federal taxes including employer payroll taxes and customs duties
– $25.9 billion collected on behalf of employees through various federal, state, and local taxes
– $7.2 billion paid in state and local taxes
– $30 billion collected and remitted as sales taxes for states and localities

These figures underscore Amazon’s extensive role in contributing to both social and economic objectives across the nation.
