Amazon reduces employee healthcare premiums and copays across US workforce

Amazon has announced that its basic health care plan for employees will now cost $5 per week, a reduction from the previous rate of over $7. The new rate will apply to all employees and their families starting on the first day of employment. Copays for doctor visits under this plan have also been reduced to $5, down from $40.

According to Amazon, “Amazon is committed to its employees’ health and well-being. Full-time employees get medical coverage, regardless of their level or position within the company, starting on the first day of the job—there’s no waiting period before benefits kick in.”

The company is investing more than $1 billion to both raise pay and lower health care costs for U.S. fulfillment and transportation workers. With these changes, Amazon states that average total compensation now exceeds $30 per hour when elected benefits are included.

“Employees save 28% on weekly health insurance premiums,” Amazon said in a statement. During open enrollment for 2026 benefits this fall, workers will be able to choose the improved plan at the new lower price. The updated plan offers the same coverage as before but with significantly reduced out-of-pocket expenses—employees will save 28% on weekly premiums and pay 88% less for doctor visits.

Coverage through Amazon’s basic health care plan includes preventative services such as screenings and immunizations at no additional cost. The primary care deductible covers various needs including pediatric visits, regular office appointments, substance use disorder treatment, and therapy services related to physical, speech, occupational, or mental health.

Other benefits available from day one include mental health resources, cancer support services, and round-the-clock access to medical advice. Employees can select from several other healthcare plans offered by Amazon based on what best fits their needs; eligibility depends on factors such as work location and employment status. Part-time and seasonal staff may qualify for medical insurance after 90 days of employment.

Amazon’s employee benefit program also extends beyond standard medical coverage by offering up to 20 weeks of paid leave for birth parents and six weeks for eligible supporting parents. Comprehensive mental health support is provided through various plans along with an Employee Assistance Program that gives access to 24/7 work-life support and free short-term counseling.

“Over 24,000 employees have used Amazon’s family-building benefits since they’ve launched,” according to information released by the company.
