Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., announced its collaboration with Honda Motor Company to transform the automaker’s vehicles into software-defined vehicles (SDVs). This transition will be facilitated by Honda’s Digital Proving Ground (DPG) platform built on AWS. The initiative aims to accelerate the delivery of new electric vehicle capabilities and mobility solutions.

The collaboration will allow Honda to leverage AWS compute, generative artificial intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities along with Honda’s data lake. This combination is expected to enhance driving experiences by supporting over-the-air software updates, personalizing vehicle features based on driver habits, and performing feature updates without physical modifications.

AWS provides Honda with scalable infrastructure for developing and testing SDV models. The DPG platform enables data collection for estimating EV range, visualizing energy consumption, and delivering software updates. This setup is anticipated to reduce hardware dependency and result in faster development timelines and cost savings.

Honda also employs AWS IoT services for continuous software development and updates, improving vehicle quality, safety, and autonomy. These services facilitate data transfer to the DPG platform for tracking EV battery information and scheduling maintenance. Furthermore, Amazon Kinesis Video Streams will be used for video processing applications that analyze car camera footage using machine learning.

Generative AI services from AWS are being utilized by Honda to improve EV charging experiences. A new solution under development guides drivers to optimal charging stations considering factors like location and fees. Amazon Bedrock will help recommend charging stations based on driver behavior patterns.

Ozgur Tohumcu, director of Automotive and Manufacturing at AWS stated: “The automotive industry is undergoing a seismic shift to digitization… Generative AI will help automakers develop new features while bringing new models to consumers faster and more cost-effectively.”

To support cloud-based mobility advancements, Honda launched an Expert Builder Initiative with AWS in 2024 aimed at enhancing skills in hybrid talent engineers through training in cloud technologies such as generative AI.
