Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SAP SE have announced a new collaboration to offer SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. This initiative aims to support organizations in highly regulated industries across Europe as they pursue artificial intelligence innovation while maintaining compliance with digital sovereignty requirements.

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud, which is scheduled to launch its first region in Brandenburg, Germany by the end of 2025, will be an independent cloud infrastructure designed specifically for public sector organizations and customers with strict regulatory needs. The planned investment for this project is €7.8 billion.

David Brown, vice president of Compute and Machine Learning at AWS, stated: “We’re delighted that SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities will be available on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. This will give organizations more choice in how they meet their sovereignty requirements while leveraging best-in-class cloud technologies. SAP and AWS share a mutual vision – we want to ensure that our customers have access to some of the most advanced sovereignty solutions available, so organizations can focus on innovation and driving tangible outcomes. We’re looking forward to our ongoing collaboration with SAP and seeing the ways that organizations across Europe will innovate with the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.”

SAP Sovereign Cloud offerings are already accessible on AWS in several regions including Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, and India. The expansion into Europe marks a significant step for both companies as they address evolving data residency, operational autonomy, and resiliency needs.

Thomas Saueressig, Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE for Customer Services and Delivery commented: “With our expanded SAP Sovereign Cloud offerings, we’re enabling customers across all industries to harness the full power of cloud innovation and AI. By deploying the SAP Sovereign Cloud portfolio on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, customers gain access to our comprehensive suite of sovereign cloud solutions, further strengthened by our trusted, long-standing partnership with Amazon Web Services.”

The initial rollout on AWS’s new sovereign infrastructure will include key products such as SAP Business Technology Platform and SAP Cloud ERP. These services are intended to provide secure management for critical business processes and sensitive data while supporting compliance with relevant regulations.

The new sovereign offering from AWS is set up as a separate entity from existing regions operated by Amazon Web Services. It features technical controls designed to assure operational independence from non-EU infrastructure along with legal protections aimed at meeting stringent regulatory standards within Europe.

AWS has provided cloud services since 2006 and currently operates over 240 fully featured services across multiple sectors globally.
