Boston City Council officials and labor groups have raised concerns about the potential risks posed by Waymo’s driverless cars, including threats to public safety and the elimination of local driving jobs.

The issue is significant as Boston’s dense streets and reliance on driving-related employment could be affected by the introduction of autonomous vehicles. Labor leaders say that automation may displace workers in rideshare, taxi, and delivery sectors, impacting many families who depend on these jobs for income.

Boston officials and labor organizations voiced opposition during a city council hearing and rally, citing concerns about how autonomous vehicles would operate on the city’s dense and unpredictable streets. Union leaders, rideshare drivers, and elected officials said conditions such as congestion and irregular road layouts could present challenges for driverless systems, particularly in emergency situations where human judgment is required, according to WGBH.

Labor leaders warned that autonomous vehicle deployment could impact tens of thousands of jobs tied to rideshare, taxi, and delivery driving in the Boston area, with union representatives stating that workers’ livelihoods are directly at risk. At public rallies, officials highlighted that many families depend on driving income, and even incremental displacement from automation could significantly reduce earnings across the sector, amplifying economic instability in working-class communities according to The Local Lens.

City policymakers have proposed regulations that would require a human safety operator in every autonomous vehicle and mandate comprehensive studies on safety and employment impacts before deployment. These measures reflect broader concern that driverless systems could malfunction in complex urban conditions—such as heavy congestion, construction zones, and emergency situations—potentially increasing risks for pedestrians, first responders, and other drivers in a city known for irregular road layouts and high traffic density according to NBC Boston.

The Boston City Council is the legislative body of the City of Boston. Councilors are elected every two years, and the council is made up of four at-large councilors who represent the entire city and nine district councilors who represent specific areas of Boston.
