ChatGPT, an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, is one such tool that people are turning to for relationship advice. Talkspace emphasizes that their articles on AI aim to provide science-backed, clinician-reviewed information to educate readers about the intersection of technology and mental health. They clarify that AI tools are not meant to replace therapists but to enhance the quality of care provided by human clinicians.

ChatGPT offers several advantages over traditional sources of advice like friends or family. It is available 24/7 and provides a platform for anonymous discussions without fear of judgment. This can be particularly beneficial when discussing sensitive relationship issues.

The type of advice ChatGPT can offer includes general communication tips, conflict resolution techniques, empathetic language suggestions, and common-sense perspectives. For instance, it may advise creating a safe space for open dialogue with a partner or using “I” statements to reduce blame during discussions.

However, Jill Daino, LCSW-R, BC-TMH at Talkspace points out that while practicing difficult conversations is valuable, “the use of AI may offer another way to help prepare if you are stuck finding the words or tone for a difficult conversation.”

Despite these advantages, there are significant limitations to relying solely on ChatGPT for relationship advice. It is not a licensed therapist and lacks the ability to understand emotional nuances or personal histories. Additionally, most versions do not have memory between chats, meaning they cannot recall previous interactions.

Daino also notes that AI does not grasp the complexities and subtleties inherent in human relationships: “The dynamics that contribute… cannot be boiled down to an AI response.”

Moreover, ChatGPT might provide irrelevant information due to its reliance on patterns in language rather than personalized understanding. Its responses tend to be neutral or generalized because it lacks an emotional connection with users.

While some individuals may find value in the neutrality offered by AI-generated responses—as evidenced by a 2025 study—others may feel unseen when seeking empathy or clarity from ChatGPT’s guidance.

Ultimately, whether ChatGPT provides good relationship advice depends on individual needs. It can be useful for brainstorming conversation strategies or gaining new perspectives but should not replace professional therapy when dealing with complex emotional issues.
