An increasing number of homeowners are choosing to remove weeds from their lawns using eco-friendly methods rather than chemical herbicides. A recent article details five such methods that are safe for both the environment and the people who use them.

One suggested method is hand weeding, which requires only a weeding tool and some physical effort. This practice eliminates weeds, including their roots, without relying on chemicals. Boiling water is another option; pouring it over weeds can effectively kill them within days.

Smothering weeds with newspaper, cardboard, or tarp is another chemical-free approach. This method starves weeds of sunlight, causing them to die off over a few days. Using salt is also an option, though caution is advised as overuse can harm the soil.

Regular lawn maintenance, including mowing and trimming, is emphasized as vital to preventing weed growth. Additionally, applying corn gluten meal in early spring acts as a natural pre-emergent to inhibit weed sprouting.

As eco-friendly practices gain popularity, the article also notes that many lawn care companies are adopting these methods. “Weeds are awful, but you don’t have to use any sort of harsh weed killer to get rid of them,” the article states.

Those interested in chemical-free lawn care can consider these methods to maintain a healthy, environmentally friendly yard.
