Columbia Business School professor Rita McGrath discussed how companies must adapt to rapid changes in the business world during the HBR Strategy Summit, according to a March 26 announcement. The event was part of a four-part special series focused on inventive strategy and organizational leadership.
The summit addressed how artificial intelligence is affecting traditional ideas about long-term competitive advantage. The topic is important as many businesses are questioning whether they can still rely on strategies that worked in the past or if they need to rethink their approach for future success.
During her conversation, McGrath explained that companies can no longer depend on their competitive advantage lasting over time. She also described what she considers the most important strategic decision organizations face today and shared her views on running an “unbossed” organization—one where traditional hierarchical structures are less prominent.
Amy Bernstein, editor in chief of Harvard Business Review, contributed by bringing audience questions into the discussion. This format allowed for direct engagement with concerns from professionals attending or following the summit.
The session forms part of a broader effort by Harvard Business Review to provide guidance as artificial intelligence and other forces reshape corporate strategy. Future episodes in this series are expected to continue exploring how organizations can respond effectively to these ongoing changes.
