DoorDash has released new data highlighting how consumer habits during the fall and winter months reflect changing dating behaviors, commonly referred to as “cuffing season.” The company reports that 94% of singles say they are participating in cuffing season this year, with participation even higher among Gen Z at 97%. This trend suggests that the tradition of forming closer relationships during colder months remains strong.

According to DoorDash, the week of September 1 saw a notable increase in customers labeling delivery addresses as “bae” or “bf/gf,” indicating that people began marking their romantic connections earlier than usual. The trend continued into October, traditionally considered the start of cuffing season.

The company’s order data also shows a nearly 30% rise in toothbrush and toothpaste orders between 5-9 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays. There is an additional spike of over 10% for these items after midnight, suggesting more overnight stays following date nights. Survey responses indicate that one in four daters admit to leaving a toothbrush behind intentionally, signaling intentions to return.

Additionally, orders for bedding such as sheets, pillowcases, and blankets increased by nearly 80% during cuffing season compared to previous months. This aligns with survey findings that 68% of people have experienced discomfort or “the ick” after seeing someone’s home, often due to clutter or poor hygiene.

Cristen Milliner, Consumer Trends Expert at DoorDash, commented on these shifts: “Culturally, there’s been a shift from talking about a relationship to subtly showing the signs of one, from labeling an address ‘bae’ to that late-night toothbrush order after a date. People are expressing connection in smaller, more personal ways. The receipts often tell the love story before the words do.”

A recent survey conducted by DoorDash found that nearly 70% of respondents believe ordering food in is as intimate or more so than dining out together. This reflects a broader change in dating culture toward convenience and flexibility.

To coincide with cuffing season trends, DoorDash is offering a promotion for customers: 25% off convenience orders of $20 or more using promo code BAE until November 4 at 9 AM ET. The offer excludes certain retailers and alcohol purchases; full terms can be found at https://drd.sh/qnAXuU.
