GreenPal outlined on May 23 the key services homeowners should consider to prepare their lawns for fall. The company said that proper fall maintenance is important to keep grass healthy during winter and ensure robust growth in the spring.

The topic matters because many people neglect lawn care as colder weather approaches, which can harm a yard’s health and make it harder for grass to recover next season. According to GreenPal, “Avoiding lawn maintenance can actually harm the yard’s health. It also makes it more difficult to grow back next season.”

Among the recommended fall services are core aeration, overseeding, dethatching, fertilization, weed control, leaf removal, and a final mow before winter sets in. Core aeration helps break up soil compaction so roots can access water and nutrients more easily. Overseeding lays the foundation for new grass growth in spring by spreading seed before winter months arrive. Dethatching removes dead grass and debris from the surface of lawns to prevent disease development.

Fertilization is suggested in two phases: one application early in fall helps recovery from summer heat while a late-fall application gives roots nutrients needed through winter dormancy. Weed control using post-emergent herbicides targets weeds like crabgrass before they drop seeds that would germinate later on.

Leaf removal is highlighted as an essential step because fallen leaves trap moisture, block sunlight, and attract pests if left unattended over winter months. A final mowing at about two inches high just before ground freeze is also advised.

GreenPal said hiring professional lawn care providers can make seasonal maintenance easier and more effective: “If you care about having a healthier lawn, it’s usually better to have a professional handle it all for you.” The company connects homeowners with qualified contractors nationwide who understand differences between cool-season and warm-season grasses.

Looking ahead, GreenPal encourages homeowners across cities like Cincinnati or Baton Rouge to use its platform when seeking affordable fall clean-up services: “Get started today and sign up to find affordable and high-quality lawn care services.”
