Freelancing is becoming an increasingly popular career choice in the United States, with projections estimating over 86 million freelancers by 2027. This represents nearly 51% of the U.S. workforce. FlexJobs’ latest report, “2025 State of Remote Freelance Jobs,” provides insights into this growing trend by analyzing job postings from more than 60,000 companies across various career categories.

The report identifies engineering and teaching as the fastest-growing fields for remote freelance jobs, with availability more than doubling in recent months. Other sectors such as nursing, travel & hospitality, consulting, and operations have also seen significant growth.

Toni Frana, FlexJobs’ Lead Career Professional, commented on these findings: “FlexJobs’ 2025 list is exciting news for freelance job seekers or anyone looking to take control of their career path. The variety of industries and jobs relying on freelance workers is a strong signal of larger marketplace shifts toward hiring specialized skills and talent—a great time for freelance workers to explore job opportunities, build their businesses, and ultimately achieve career fulfillment.”

Among the top ten in-demand remote freelance job titles are nurses, therapists, project managers, accountants, customer service representatives, recruiters, graphic designers, executive assistants, payroll specialists, and copywriters.

For those seeking entry-level or high-paying freelance positions in 2025, targeting specific keywords like “contract work” or “independent contractor” can expand search results. Additionally, building a strong personal brand and utilizing social media networks are recommended strategies for attracting clients.

Frana emphasizes that proactive job search methods are crucial for success: “To successfully find freelance work use proactive job search methods and targeted strategies to build connections attract potential clients and grow your prospects.”

As freelancing continues to evolve as a viable career option offering flexibility and autonomy professionals must navigate challenges such as financial planning administrative tasks and maintaining steady client relationships.
