GreenPal has released data from over 100,000 lawn care appointments between 2022 and 2025, shedding light on tipping practices among homeowners who use its platform. The analysis looked at how much customers are tipping their lawn care professionals and which cities stand out for generosity.

According to GreenPal, the average tip given per appointment falls within the $5 to $10 range. San Antonio leads nationally with an average tip of $8.44 per visit. The company notes that while there is no standard tipping percentage as in restaurants, the amount depends on factors such as yard size, frequency of service, and individual budgets.

For those wondering about frequency, GreenPal suggests that some homeowners prefer to tip after each visit—usually between $5 and $10—while others opt for a lump sum at the end of the season or during holidays. Seasonal tips typically range from $20 to $50 but can be higher if a crew has provided long-term service.

“Tipping isn’t just about the money; it’s about recognition. Lawn care crews do tough physical work and often go above and beyond what’s expected. A small bonus shows you notice and appreciate their effort,” states GreenPal in its report.

The data also highlights notable instances of large tips, including a $999 tip in Indianapolis, a $550 tip in Clarksville, and a $450 tip in Charlotte. Nashville stands out for total volume: across more than ten thousand appointments, nearly $70,000 was given in tips by local homeowners.

GreenPal emphasizes that while tipping is not mandatory, it can make a difference by supporting local professionals—many of whom are small business owners—and encouraging consistent service quality. “Tipping also encourages consistency. When a crew knows their work is valued, they’re more likely to prioritize your yard and keep service levels high,” the company says.

Homeowners across the South and Midwest appear particularly generous according to GreenPal’s findings. The company recommends that whether customers choose to tip weekly or once annually, regular appreciation matters more than any specific amount.

“When you book through GreenPal, you’re not just getting reliable lawn care; you’re connecting with professionals who take pride in their work. And as the numbers show, homeowners across the country are showing their appreciation in a big way,” GreenPal concludes.
