Homeowners face the ongoing challenge of keeping weeds out of their lawns and gardens. A recent survey by an unnamed organization gathered responses from 114 homeowners, revealing a variety of methods they use to tackle this common problem.

Chemical herbicides were the most popular choice among respondents, with 21 votes. Homeowners noted the use of both selective and non-selective herbicides, explaining the latter, such as those containing glyphosate, kill all vegetation they come into contact with.

Organic options also gained significant attention, with 19 participants opting for organic herbicides. These are considered safer for pets and the environment, often made from natural materials. Shaji et al. explain in “Controlled Release Fertilizers for Sustainable Agriculture” that “organic fertilizers comprise a variety of plant-derived materials that range from fresh or dried plant material to animal manures and litters to agricultural byproducts.”

Flame weeding, an unconventional technique, received approval from 14 homeowners. This method involves using a propane torch to heat and destroy unwanted plants. Despite its effectiveness on surfaces like sidewalks, caution is advised when used near desirable plants.

Smothering weeds was a method mentioned by 5 respondents. This involves laying materials such as cardboard or newspaper over weeds to cut off their sunlight and nutrients. Some homeowners noted success with black plastic, a technique known as plastic sheeting.

For those who prefer traditional methods, pulling weeds by hand remains viable, with 8 respondents endorsing this labor-intensive process. The importance of completely removing the root to prevent regrowth was emphasized.

Improving lawn health through consistent care methods like mowing and watering was favored by 7 voters. Respondents highlighted GreenPal, an application that connects users with vetted lawn care professionals, facilitating the process.

To prevent weed growth, 15 respondents mentioned pre-emergent herbicides. These products are applied to the soil to inhibit weed development before they break through.

Tools dedicated to weed removal were also popular, with another 8 voters utilizing them for efficient and precise work.

Hiring professional lawn care services received 17 votes. These services often include additional benefits like fertilization and advice on maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

In summary, the survey revealed diverse strategies from chemical to manual approaches, with many homeowners choosing methods that align with personal preferences and environmental considerations. The findings highlight the various options available to those seeking a weed-free yard.
