Italy is drawing increased attention from winter travelers this year, a trend driven in part by anticipation for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Airbnb reports that search interest for Italian destinations is rising sharply, especially in regions hosting Olympic events such as Trentino-South Tyrol, Lombardy, and Veneto. Lombardy, in particular, has seen search growth more than double compared to last year. The most active countries showing travel interest to Italy during the Olympics include Germany, Canada, domestic Italian travelers, Switzerland, and the United States.
Outside of Italy’s Olympic spotlight, travelers are showing growing interest in “gateway” cities—urban areas close to scenic natural landscapes. This global trend sees visitors opting for locations that offer both city amenities and access to beaches, jungles, forests, or lakes.
In the United States, Airbnb notes a divide among winter vacationers. Some are seeking less crowded ski towns such as Brighton, Utah (near Park City), and McCall, Idaho. Others prefer warm weather getaways in arts-focused beach communities.
Older travelers—especially those aged 60 and above—are booking longer stays this winter season. Many of these “snowbirds” are heading to Florida; all of their top trending destinations fall within the state and include The Villages, Fort Myers Beach, and Venice. A recent Airbnb survey found that nearly half of travelers over 60 are traveling with partners and about a quarter favor beach houses or condos for their accommodations.
Families continue to be prominent participants in domestic US travel during winter months. According to Airbnb data, 80 percent of families are choosing suburban or rural destinations for their trips this season. Activities attracting these groups range from hiking on winter trails and snow sports to kite-flying and attending holiday events.
Airbnb highlights its offerings designed for the holidays—including unique listings through Airbnb Originals—and notes that guests can select options tailored for both adventure-filled getaways or quiet celebrations at home. The company also suggests giving Airbnb gift cards as a way to share travel experiences with loved ones.
