Last month, Lyft introduced a new feature called Pet Rides, allowing riders to bring their pets on Lyft trips. By accepting a Lyft Pet request, drivers agree to allow the passenger’s pet in their vehicle.

Lyft Pet rides operate like standard Lyft rides, with the key difference being the inclusion of a pet. Drivers who accept these rides receive a $4 bonus for each completed trip. Currently, this feature is available only in select markets within the United States.

Drivers can use the Solo app to track earnings and optimize driving schedules based on projected hourly rates.

Lyft permits riders to bring one cat or dog per ride. There is no option for additional pets, meaning Lyft Pet rides can accommodate up to four passengers and one pet.

Regarding service animals, Lyft’s policy states: “Service animals are working animals, not pets. […] Service animals are not required to wear a tag or vest or be registered. Riders with service animals do not need to display any kind of proof that their animal is a service animal.” Drivers must transport riders with service animals regardless of personal preferences or allergies.

To enable Lyft Pet as a driver, no action is needed; drivers are automatically opted in and can start earning the additional $4 bonus. To opt out, drivers can adjust their preferences through the Lyft app by navigating to ‘Driving Preferences,’ locating ‘Ride Preferences,’ selecting ‘Pet rides,’ and toggling the preference off.

Drivers must still accommodate passengers with service animals even if they have opted out of offering Lyft Pet rides. Denying such a ride could result in permanent deactivation from the platform.

In case of pet-related messes during a ride, drivers should handle situations professionally and efficiently. They should inform riders politely about any messes and have basic cleaning supplies ready in their vehicle. If significant cleaning is required, drivers should document the incident with photos and contact Lyft support for further assistance and potential cleaning fees.

Driving with Lyft Pet offers an opportunity for additional income while providing pet-friendly services. Understanding policies on service animals, managing ride preferences, and preparing for potential messes can help create positive experiences for all passengers.

Using tools like the Solo app can help drivers track earnings and optimize schedules for better success in their rideshare journey.
