Jen Dewar, a marketing consultant at Jalydew, emphasized the importance of upskilling to address skills gaps and meet employees’ increasing demand for career advancement. She made this statement on LinkedIn.

“You need talent with the right mix of skills to address business challenges and opportunities, but the right people are notoriously hard to come by,” said Dewar, according to LinkedIn. “It’s no surprise then that LinkedIn’s Workplace Learning Report identified upskilling employees as a top focus area for L&D in 2023. LinkedIn’s Global Talent Trends found that opportunities for upskilling and career advancement are among people’s top workplace priorities right now. Upskilling enables you to build a talented team that can help your organization attain your business goals and remain relevant in the future.”

The 2023 LinkedIn Workplace Learning Report reveals that job skill sets have evolved by approximately 25% since 2015, with expectations for this trend to double by 2027. This change is attributed to economic disruptions, talent shortages, inflation, and global tensions. The report indicates that 89% of Learning & Development (L&D) professionals agree on the necessity of proactively building employee skills for current and future roles. However, organizations report only slight progress from 2022 to 2023 in advancing through the maturity stages of upskilling/reskilling programs, with fewer reaching late-stage measurement or assessment phases.

According to LinkedIn’s 2023 report, retaining talent remains a top concern for 93% of organizations. Many are turning to learning and development opportunities as their primary strategy for improving retention. Additionally, 83% of organizations aim to cultivate a more people-centric culture, with 81% of L&D departments contributing to shaping these cultures. These statistics underscore the strong global demand from both employees and organizations for career advancement and skills development pathways.

Amazon’s Upskilling 2025 initiative has committed over US$1.2 billion from 2019 through 2025 to provide free skills training opportunities to more than 350,000 U.S. employees and globally upskill over 300,000 employees in high-demand roles across fulfillment centers, retail stores, corporate offices, tech hubs, and transportation.
