Maryland Diaper Bank has announced a new partnership with Uber that will provide ride credits to new mothers for postpartum and pediatric medical appointments, as well as emergency deliveries of diapers and hygiene products for families unable to travel to distribution sites.
In its announcement, the group said the initiative is intended to reduce transportation barriers that can prevent families with young children from accessing medical care and essential supplies. Launched during Black Maternal Health Week, the program combines transportation support with delivery services to expand access for families most in need.
Maryland Diaper Bank said it distributes tens of thousands of diapers each day across the state and has provided more than 2.3 million diapers since its founding in 2018. The organization works with community partners in multiple counties, including Montgomery County, to reach families regularly and in emergencies.Â
The Uber partnership is expected to expand that reach by helping households overcome both supply shortages and transportation challenges, according to MoCo Show.
The effort comes amid widespread diaper insecurity nationwide. According to the National Diaper Bank Network, nearly half of U.S. households with children under age 4 experience diaper insecurity, with about 40% reporting difficulty affording an adequate supply. The organization says these shortages can create financial strain for families and affect infant health and well-being.
Maryland Diaper Bank, founded in September 2018, is a nonprofit focused on providing diapers and hygiene essentials to support infant health and hygiene across Maryland. It partners with local organizations to distribute supplies on both a regular and emergency basis to families throughout the state.
