Preparing for a military deployment involves several important steps to ensure a smooth transition and return. A comprehensive pre-deployment checklist can help service members address health, legal, financial, and personal affairs before leaving.

Health and medical preparations are crucial. Service members should undergo a complete medical check-up and ensure vaccinations are up-to-date as mandated by the government. It is also essential to manage medications and consider mental health evaluations due to rising concerns in the military community.

Legal preparations include updating wills or trusts, setting up powers of attorney, organizing important documents, and ensuring family members have access to deployment orders. Financial planning involves creating budgets, setting up automatic payments, establishing emergency funds, and providing trusted individuals with access to financial resources.

Family responsibilities must be managed through plans for childcare or eldercare and pet care arrangements. Communication plans should be established to maintain contact with loved ones during deployment using phone calls, video chats, emails, letters, or care packages.

Dr. Olga Molina from Talkspace emphasizes the importance of communication: “It is crucial to maintain regular communication with family and loved ones in order to have a support system during active duty which will help in sustaining your mental health.”

Mental well-being preparation is vital due to potential long-term effects like PTSD. Dr. Molina notes: “Deployment is one of the most stressful sides of military life for service members and their families… Research shows that deployment can lead to poorer mental health for military personnel…”

Cultural awareness training may be required depending on the region of deployment. Packing essentials include necessary documents, clothing meeting regulations, medical supplies, comfort items like photos or books, and ensuring all final checklist items are completed before departure.

Talkspace offers online therapy tailored for veterans and active-duty service members covered by TRICARE insurance plans. This platform provides accessible support before, during, and after deployment.
