Pet safety is a primary concern for homeowners who use lawn fertilizers. The Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) frequently receives calls about pets accidentally ingesting lawn and garden products, indicating the importance of pet-safe options.

Traditional fertilizers contain chemicals that can be harmful to pets. Even organic fertilizers, often considered safer, may cause gastrointestinal distress if ingested. The Pet Poison Helpline warns, “small ingestions of fertilizer may only result in mild stomach upset, larger ingestions can result in severe poisoning from the iron, nitrogen and other chemicals.”

Pet owners are encouraged to seek out chemical-free fertilizers made from ingredients like bone meal or compost. However, it’s crucial to understand that ‘pet-safe’ does not equate to completely harmless. These alternatives reduce risks but still require caution.

The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) provides guidance by certifying products as compliant with organic standards. OMRI’s multi-step review process ensures transparency and helps consumers identify safer options for their lawns.

Several products labeled as pet-safe include Scotts Natural Lawn Food, Espoma Organic Lawn Food All Seasons, and Purely Organic Lawn Food. While these are deemed safer, they are not entirely risk-free.

Homeowners should follow product instructions carefully and wait longer than recommended before allowing pets on treated areas. Watching pets closely after application is advised to prevent any potential health issues.

Despite various safety measures and certifications like those from OMRI, no fertilizer is entirely safe for pets. It’s essential to store all fertilizers securely away from animals and ensure treated lawns are dry before allowing pet access.

“Areas treated with Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer can be entered immediately after application,” according to scotts.com; however, watering the lawn first is recommended to activate the fertilizer while minimizing tracking into homes.

In case of accidental ingestion or symptoms of distress in pets following fertilization of a lawn, contacting a veterinarian promptly is critical for ensuring pet safety.
