SolidGigs released guidance on Apr. 8 for freelancers planning to move their home office to a different state, emphasizing the importance of coordinated planning for both personal and business aspects of relocation.
The company said that moving an office is not only a logistical challenge but also affects client relationships, income flow, and daily work routines. According to SolidGigs, those who plan the physical move alongside business requirements are more likely to transition smoothly.
SolidGigs recommends working with a reliable long-distance broker early in the process so freelancers can focus on maintaining business operations during the move. The guidance stresses proactive communication with clients: “Clients need to hear from you before the moving date, not after. A short email telling them your timeline and expected downtime is all it takes.” The advice continues that clear advance notice helps build trust with clients during periods of change.
Administrative tasks are highlighted as crucial in avoiding compliance issues or payment delays. Freelancers are advised to update registered addresses, licenses, invoicing details, and insurance policies promptly upon arrival in a new state. The company points out that tax obligations may differ by state and suggests consulting a local accountant: “A local accountant in your new state is worth the consultation fee. They can tell you exactly what applies to your situation and what filings you need to set up from day one.”
Preparation of the workspace before starting work at the new location is another key recommendation. Booking internet installation ahead of time and prioritizing essential equipment setup can minimize downtime: “Getting through this list within two days keeps your offline window short and manageable,” SolidGigs advises.
The release also notes common budgeting oversights such as underestimating utility connection fees or lost income due to downtime, recommending an additional buffer above quoted costs for unexpected expenses.
Jack Nolan said, “Start your planning early, communicate with clients before the move date, and handle your admin in the first week after you arrive.” He added that treating relocation as a structured business project helps ensure continued success.
