SolidGigs released guidance on May 7 about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) writing tools by freelancers, addressing how these technologies are affecting freelance work and client expectations.
The topic is important as many freelancers are facing questions from clients about AI, seeing changes in project rates, and considering whether using tools like ChatGPT or Jasper benefits their workflow. The company says that while AI can assist with brainstorming, outlining, research support, and copy editing, it should not replace the unique voice and expertise of the writer.
“AI-assisted writing works best when human creativity and subject matter expertise stay at the controls. Freelance writing has always been competitive, and what clients actually pay for is a perspective they can’t generate themselves,” SolidGigs said in its statement. The company outlined that AI should be used to speed up parts of the process that do not require deep thinking but emphasized that “human creativity and accountability aren’t optional extras in this workflow. They’re the whole point.”
According to SolidGigs, tasks such as idea generation or summarizing research notes are suitable for automation with AI tools. However, they caution against letting models supply analysis or storytelling: “Publishing raw AI-generated content is where the line gets crossed. Models don’t have sources, lived experience, or accountability.” The company further stated that editors and clients often notice when content lacks authenticity due to overreliance on automated tools.
The release also provides advice for freelancers communicating with clients about their use of AI: “Client transparency in freelance writing isn’t about disclosing every tool in the stack. It’s about confirming that the judgment, voice, and accuracy are unambiguously the writer’s responsibility.” SolidGigs encourages freelancers to set clear expectations early in projects regarding which aspects remain human-driven.
Looking ahead, SolidGigs said that authenticity remains a key advantage for writers even as access to AI becomes widespread: “Human creativity, informed perspective, and accountability for the finished work are still what separate one writer from the next.” The company concluded by offering support services designed to help freelancers find better job leads so they can focus more on creative work.
