Anger is a common emotion that people experience at different stages of life. For teenagers, managing anger can be particularly challenging due to hormonal changes and social pressures. Talkspace therapist Reshawna Chapple emphasizes the importance of recognizing triggers: “A ‘trigger’ can result from a smell, a memory, a word, etc. A trigger can mentally return someone to a negative event or a previous trauma.”

Effective anger management skills are crucial for maintaining mental health and relationships during adolescence. Techniques such as deep breathing, pausing before reacting, journaling, listening to music, exercising, and engaging in creative outlets can help teens channel their anger constructively.

Chapple advises taking timeouts when feeling intense emotions: “Whenever you feel intense emotions or are speaking with someone that might cause you to get upset… take a 10-second timeout.” Positive self-talk and problem-solving instead of blame are also recommended strategies.

Having trusted individuals like friends or family members to talk to is vital for support. In some cases, seeking professional help may be necessary if anger becomes overwhelming. Chapple notes the bravery in seeking therapy: “Asking for help and seeking therapy for anger management is brave.”

Online therapy platforms like Talkspace offer accessible solutions for teens struggling with anger management by connecting them with licensed therapists experienced in dealing with adolescents.
