Mowing on slopes presents a unique challenge, requiring specialized equipment to ensure safety and effectiveness. A recent survey of 225 homeowners who regularly mow hilly terrains sheds light on the best lawn mowers for such conditions.

According to the survey, Ventrac and Steiner brands were highly recommended, with both accounting for 33% of all votes. These brands are noted for their superior stability and traction on steep inclines. “Though Ventrac and Steiner’s mowers are quite a spend, they will do things on a hill that few other lawn tractors ever can,” stated the survey results.

The Toro Super Recycler was also favored, receiving 11.1% of the vote. It features a 163cc Briggs Stratton engine and a Personal Pace system that adjusts to the user’s walking speed, making it easier to maneuver on slopes.

John Deere’s X300 Series garnered 11.6% of votes, praised for its low center of gravity and powerful engine that handle uphill mowing effectively. The Cub Cadet ZTS2 received 9.3% of votes as the top choice among zero-turn mowers due to its four-wheel steering and robust Kohler 7000 Series PRO engine.

Homeowners emphasized key features such as strong engines, rear-wheel drive, and advanced steering systems when selecting mowers suitable for hills. Despite their higher cost, models like Ventrac and Steiner were deemed worth the investment due to their performance in maintaining traction and control on challenging terrains.

In summary, while mowing hills is demanding work, choosing the right mower can make it more manageable.
