As spring approaches, homeowners are encouraged to prepare their lawns for the upcoming season. A little effort in early spring can set the stage for a healthy yard throughout the summer.

The first step is to tackle any leftover leaves from fall. “Hopefully, you or your service pro tackled the leaves in the fall,” the guide suggests. If not, it recommends using a suitable rake for a deep clean that removes dead grass from winter.

Inspection of both the lawn and equipment is essential. Homeowners should check for bare spots and brown patches while ensuring tools like lawn mowers and sprinkler systems are operational.

Reseeding is advised to fill any bare areas, as grass competes with weeds for space. Mowing should commence once temperatures consistently rise above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, but it’s important not to cut too short. The recommendation is not lower than 2½ inches or more than one-third of the blade length.

Edging adds a neat appearance and prevents overgrowth onto sidewalks and flowerbeds. Fertilization acts like a multivitamin for lawns, promoting lush growth when based on soil test results available at local home stores.

Weed prevention through pre-emergent herbicides is crucial, especially in areas prone to crabgrass. Pruning shrubs after they bloom ensures optimal growth, while watering schedules should be adjusted according to regional needs without overwatering.

Aeration might be necessary if there are issues with compaction or excessive thatch. This process helps promote healthy lawns by allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach roots effectively.

For those unsure about where to start with spring lawn care, beginning when soil temperatures stay above 50°F (10°C) is suggested. Initial steps include applying pre-emergent herbicide and light fertilizer based on soil tests.

A balanced slow-release nitrogen fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio close to 20-5-10 is recommended for spring growth. To achieve greener grass, aerating, overseeding thin spots, fertilizing appropriately, consistent watering, proper mowing height maintenance, and checking soil pH are key actions.

“Fertilization acts like a multivitamin,” reiterates the guidance on achieving vibrant lawns through appropriate nutrient application based on specific soil needs.

Homeowners with questions are encouraged to consult local lawn care professionals for tailored advice suited to their specific conditions.
