True Ground Housing Partners, a nonprofit affordable housing developer, has announced an expansion of its partnership with Uber to provide free rides for seniors living in the organization’s affordable housing communities in Arlington.
The expanded program will offer additional transportation options for senior residents in True Ground Housing Partners’ apartment communities. The organization said on LinkedIn that eligible residents will be able to request free Uber trips—subsidized by the transportation company—by working with resident services coordinators at each property. Staff will assist residents in safely boarding their rides and will remain in contact until they reach their destinations and return home.
This initiative comes as Arlington County prepares for a significant demographic shift among its residents.
Arlington County planning documents indicate that older adult-headed households are expected to grow three times faster than those headed by residents under age 65. The county currently has nearly 12,000 committed affordable rental homes and prioritizes locating them near transit to help reduce living costs. Many seniors in these communities rely on dependable transportation to attend medical appointments and access essential services.
True Ground Housing Partners manages more than 20 residential communities in Arlington County and provides resident services to support families and seniors.
According to the National Council on Aging, more than 40 percent of older adults and younger adults with disabilities rely on rides from family, friends, or neighbors. Studies show that rideshare programs can improve quality of life for seniors, with participants reporting better access to care and increased social engagement. Advocates say private-sector initiatives help address transportation gaps for older adults on fixed incomes nationwide.
Partnerships such as the one between True Ground Housing Partners and Uber are designed to support seniors in maintaining independence and accessing essential services.
