Uber has announced new initiatives to further its commitment to becoming a zero-emissions platform by 2040. The company has significantly increased the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on its platform, now boasting over 182,000 EVs globally. This move is part of Uber’s broader strategy to encourage the adoption of electric transportation.

In London, nearly 30% of all miles driven via Uber are now electric. Uber Green, which offers hybrid or electric rides, is available in over 200 cities worldwide. The company emphasizes that both public and private sectors must act with urgency to address environmental concerns.

Uber is introducing several new features for consumers to promote sustainable choices. “All-Electric Uber Green” will be an EV-only option in more than 40 cities globally. Additionally, a new “EV Preference” feature allows riders to select an EV when one is nearby, ensuring minimal wait times compared to standard rides.

The company also plans to launch premium EV pop-ups in various cities, allowing riders to experience advanced electric vehicles like the Lotus Eletre and Rivian R1. An updated emission savings feature will enable users to track their contributions towards reducing emissions through various ride options.

For drivers, Uber is launching an AI Assistant powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o to answer questions related to EVs. A mentorship program will connect experienced EV drivers with those interested in transitioning to electric vehicles. In partnership with Octopus Energy and BYD, Uber will offer free home chargers and discounted charging options for UK drivers.

Merchants using Uber Eats will have access to a new Green Packaging Marketplace aimed at simplifying the purchase of sustainable packaging materials. A pilot program in Paris will invest nearly $1 million in promoting sustainable packaging alternatives among restaurants.

Uber also announced it has joined The Earthshot Prize as a founding partner, aiming to collaborate with climate innovators worldwide. The company intends to support entrepreneurs working on electrification and sustainable delivery solutions.
