Uber announced on Jan. 15 a new package of benefits for independent rideshare drivers in Massachusetts, including minimum earnings guarantees, paid sick leave, occupational accident insurance, support for paid family medical leave, and a portable health fund.
The company said the program aims to provide greater stability and protections for drivers while maintaining their status as independent contractors. The announcement follows an agreement with the Massachusetts Attorney General and comes as demand for rideshare services remains high across the state.
Uber published the details of its Massachusetts Driver Benefits program on its official blog to inform drivers of the options available following the agreement with Attorney General Andrea Campbell. The company explained how earnings guarantees will be calculated over two-week periods starting every Monday at 4:00 AM ET and how drivers will receive supplements if trip fares and incentives fall below the minimum threshold. Benefits apply only to qualifying Ride trips that begin in Massachusetts, and drivers access everything through the MA Benefits Hub in the Driver App. The program rolled out in stages beginning in October 2024, with additional features added through 2025.
Massachusetts maintains a large base of rideshare drivers who complete hundreds of thousands of trips each month across the state, with particularly high activity in the Boston metro area. State transportation network company reports show strong demand for rideshare services in urban corridors where drivers frequently operate during peak hours. The benefits package is intended to support these drivers by providing earnings stability and additional protections while they continue to set their own schedules as independent contractors, according to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. Local data confirm the program covers active time from en route pickup through drop-off on qualifying trips.
