Uber is highlighting its multi-layer driver screening system for U.S. drivers, saying the company uses initial background checks, annual re-screenings and continuous monitoring technology to help identify drivers who may become ineligible to remain on the platform.
The company outlined the process through official newsroom and safety materials describing its background check system as part of broader rider and driver safety efforts.
Uber says every prospective driver must complete a screening before taking a first trip on the platform. According to the company, the process includes motor vehicle record checks and criminal history reviews conducted through accredited third-party background check providers with courthouse-level verification.
The company says the screenings are designed to identify potentially disqualifying criminal offenses and driving violations before drivers are approved.
Uber also says all active U.S. drivers undergo annual criminal and driving history re-checks intended to ensure continued eligibility on the platform.
In addition to scheduled re-screenings, Uber says it uses continuous monitoring technology that can flag newly reported criminal charges in near real time, even between annual background checks. Uber says the monitoring system was pioneered by the company in 2018 as part of expanded safety initiatives.
According to Uber, drivers who receive potentially disqualifying charges or convictions can lose access to the platform immediately while reviews are conducted.
Uber says the system was designed to strengthen oversight throughout a driver’s time using the platform rather than relying only on a one-time screening before activation.
The company also says screening standards can vary by jurisdiction because states and local governments maintain different reporting systems and eligibility requirements.
Broader safety investments also include trip monitoring tools, emergency assistance features, ride verification technology and driver identity checks.
The company has increasingly emphasized safety and screening practices as rideshare companies continue facing scrutiny over driver vetting standards and platform accountability.
Uber says its combination of initial screenings, annual re-checks and continuous monitoring represents one of the most extensive driver screening systems currently used in the rideshare industry.
