Uber has announced a series of new safety features designed to enhance the protection and security of its drivers and couriers.

These updates are part of Uber’s ongoing commitment to ensuring a safer experience for the more than 7 million drivers and couriers on its platform, the company said in a press release on September 17.

“We’re continuing to invest in new features to help drivers feel safer when driving on Uber,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber.

A key component of the new launch includes enhanced rider verification nationwide. Drivers in the U.S. will see a new “Verified” rider badge on trip requests, enhancing safety and transparency. This badge indicates that riders have completed additional verification steps, addressing driver feedback for more information about passengers. Riders can verify their identity through third-party databases or by uploading a government-issued ID.

Initially piloted in select cities, the program showed that verified riders receive higher ratings and generate fewer serious complaints, according to Uber. Additional verification options will soon be available, including for existing CLEAR Members.

There will also be a nationwide launch of “Record My Ride,” a feature that allows drivers to use their smartphone’s front-facing camera to record video and audio during trips, providing an additional layer of security. Recordings are encrypted and stored directly on the driver’s device, accessible only by the driver unless submitted for review.

Uber is also introducing new technologies to enhance safety, including the ability for drivers with Teslas to connect their car’s display to the Uber app for seamless navigation. Additionally, iOS users can now use Siri for hands-free app control, and drivers can activate a PIN verification system to ensure they are picking up the correct rider.
