Effexor, also known as venlafaxine, is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) prescribed for various mental health conditions such as major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. It is sometimes used off-label for other conditions like premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), migraines, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

The medication works by increasing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, which are crucial chemicals for mood regulation. Individuals starting Effexor often question how long it will take to notice improvements in their symptoms.

According to research, approximately 60% of individuals may experience improvement within six to eight weeks of starting antidepressants like Effexor. Initial improvements are often seen in physical symptoms such as energy levels, appetite, and sleep patterns. Mood-related symptoms might take longer to improve.

Several factors can affect how quickly Effexor starts working. These include dosage adjustments, the specific condition being treated, individual body chemistry including metabolism and health history, other medications being taken concurrently, and potential interactions with these medications.

Effexor typically begins at a low dose of around 75 mg/day divided into two or three doses. This dosage may be gradually increased based on individual response and tolerance. The maximum recommended dose for depression is usually 225 mg/day but can go up to 375 mg/day in severe cases.

For those concerned about whether Effexor is effective after six to eight weeks without noticeable improvement, consulting a doctor is advised. Adjustments in dosage or switching medications might be necessary. Combining medication with cognitive behavioral therapy or making lifestyle changes can also enhance treatment outcomes.

It’s important not to stop taking Effexor abruptly without medical guidance due to potential withdrawal symptoms.

Talkspace offers online psychiatry services where individuals can obtain evaluations and prescriptions for Effexor from licensed psychiatric providers.
