Upstage has announced a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance the development and deployment of its Solar language models. The collaboration will focus on expanding access to generative AI technology in the Asia-Pacific region and the United States. As part of this agreement, Amazon will also make a minority investment in Upstage.

Under the terms of the partnership, Upstage will use AWS as its preferred cloud provider for building, training, and deploying future foundation models. The company plans to utilize AWS’s machine learning infrastructure, including Amazon SageMaker and specialized chips like Trainium and Inferentia, to scale its large language model Solar and related AI-powered document processing solutions.

Sung Kim, CEO and co-founder of Upstage, stated: “Upstage and AWS have built a strong foundation through years of collaboration, and this agreement represents a new chapter in our shared vision to accelerate AI innovation globally. With AWS as our strategic partner, we’re poised to scale our impact and bring secure, intelligent, and high-performing AI solutions to more organizations in the public sector.”

The companies aim to provide generative AI solutions tailored for governments, public agencies, and regulated industries that require high standards for performance, security, and compliance. Joint go-to-market strategies are planned across both APAC and US markets.

Jon Jones, VP and Global Head of Startups and Venture Capital at AWS said: “AWS is excited to enable Upstage to unleash a new wave of innovation. From our fully-managed AI services to purpose-built chips for training and inferencing of foundation models, Upstage is leveraging AWS to uplevel how public sector stakeholders apply AI to improve efficiency and productivity, while keeping everybody’s data safe and secure.”

Upstage has used Amazon SageMaker for training its Solar models over several years. The company credits advanced data pre-processing techniques available through AWS with reducing model training times. Additionally, it implemented its proprietary Depth-Up Scaling method using AWS infrastructure.

The Solar family includes models such as the 10.7B-parameter Solar Mini and 22B-parameter Solar Pro. These are accessible via Amazon Bedrock Marketplace, Amazon SageMaker JumpStart, and AWS Marketplace platforms. Organizations across finance, healthcare, legal sectors—as well as educational institutions—are already deploying these tools for digital transformation efforts throughout Korea and other regions.

Abhijeet Muzumdar, Vice President of Corporate Development at Amazon said: “Upstage has established itself as a key AI innovator in the Asia-Pacific region. With this investment we are excited to support Upstage’s next phase of growth as they scale their Solar foundation models and document processing solutions. Sung Kim and his team are delivering impressive AI technology that’s already helping several organizations across multiple sectors, and we’re committed to fostering continued innovation in generative AI by supporting visionary companies like Upstage.”

Recently launched by Upstage is Solar Pro 2—a flagship language model featuring 31 billion parameters designed for complex reasoning tasks with dual operational modes aimed at improving performance in logic-intensive workflows such as mathematics or coding.

In addition to language modeling advancements, Upstage offers Document Intelligence on AWS Marketplace within the AI Agents & Tools category—an enterprise-grade solution capable of extracting information from documents with diverse layouts (e.g., contracts or invoices) into structured formats suitable for further analysis or integration into downstream applications.

Earlier this year in April 2025 [https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/publicsector/aws-and-upstage-collaborate-to-accelerate-generative-ai-adoption-in-the-public-sector/], both companies co-launched an initiative aimed at increasing generative AI adoption among educational institutions and nonprofit organizations. This program provides free API access from Upstage alongside complimentary infrastructure support from AWS—including resources like Skill Builder training modules—and has already enrolled over 200 organizations such as Seoul National University and KAIST.
