Upwork has announced a study from The Upwork Research Institute, highlighting that artificial intelligence (AI) is increasing the workloads of full-time employees, reducing productivity, and causing burnout. The study also found that freelancers are leveraging AI more effectively, leading to higher productivity compared to full-time workers.

According to the report, significant stress among full-time employees is due to rising productivity demands, with one-third considering quitting in the next six months. Despite high expectations from C-suite leaders for AI to boost productivity, 77% of employees find AI tools increase their workload. Many workers are unclear on how to meet productivity expectations with AI, while freelancers, who are more adept at using AI, report higher productivity and fewer struggles with client demands. Additionally, C-suite leaders who incorporate freelancers have seen improvements in organizational agility, work quality, and employee well-being.

“Our research shows that introducing new technologies into outdated work models and systems is failing to unlock the full expected productivity value of AI,” said Kelly Monahan, managing director of The Upwork Research Institute. “While it’s certainly possible for AI to simultaneously boost productivity and improve employee well-being, this outcome will require a fundamental shift in how we organize talent and work.”
