Uber recently revealed that the company is adding resources to give its drivers a more comfortable and safe experience.
"It's important that drivers with Uber feel comfortable with whoever gets into their vehicle," the ride-hail giant said in a mid-May Twitter post. "We've created guidelines, tools, and rider verification processes to help drivers feel confident at every pickup."
A new safety feature called Follow My Ride allows drivers to share their trips with a family member or friend, who will then know when the trip has successfully been completed, according to Uber.
The company keeps drivers' phone numbers private in the event that they need to contact a rider. If something goes wrong on a trip, Uber offers a 24/7 support line. Drivers are able to rate passengers, and Uber can remove certain users from the app if deemed necessary to protect the Uber community.
RideCheck is a feature that uses sensors and GPS data to detect if a trip has gone off-course, or if a crash might have occurred. RideCheck enables Uber to check in with drivers and offer resources if they need help. Drivers also have access to an emergency assistance button within the app, which allows them to quickly share trip information with emergency services.
Uber ensures drivers through the Driver app, whether they are transporting passengers or delivering food, according to Uber. The company maintains third-party liability auto insurance of up to $1,000,000 in the case of a covered accident, as well as collision insurance up to the actual cash value of the car with a $2,500 deductible.
The number of customers who use Uber increased from 93 million in 2020 to 118 million in 2021, according to Business of Apps. Uber drivers completed more than 6 billion trips in 2021, for an average of more than 17 million trips per day. More than 5 million people across the globe worked as Uber drivers in 2021.
