DoorDash introduced its enhanced dual ID verification system to enable delivering alcohol more safely and responsibly.

Don't get surprised when Dashers will have to scan the front of your ID card to verify your identity such as making sure you are not younger than 21 years old prior to handing off and completing the delivery—that's only a part of the two-step verification. The delivery can only be completed if the Dasher will be able to identify that the customer is not intoxicated.

“At DoorDash, safety is a top priority and our goal is to deliver alcohol in the safest and most responsible way possible,” Erik Ragotte, DoorDash’s General Manager of Alcohol, said. “With today’s announcement of two-step or dual ID verification, we’re setting a new industry standard for responsible alcohol delivery. The new safety measures will help ensure alcohol is delivered to people over the age of 21. We will continue to innovate and find even more ways to promote responsible alcohol delivery.”

Prior to this launch, the service only required the consumer to upload an image of their ID that Dashers were supposed to check when they arrived at the consumer´s home. Dallas, Detroit, Miami, Phoenix, Portland, Oregon, Seattle and Northern Virginia were some of the pilot locations in which the two-step verification was rolled out.

DoorDash first started delivering alcohol in Southern California in 2016 before expanding to 20 additional states last September.

In 2020, California’s Department of Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) found that food delivery services like DoorDash, shared a significant part in the increased alcohol deliveries to underage consumers, The Verge reported. With the new verification process, Dashers will be able to ensure that they are safely and responsibly delivering alcohol to customers.

The app will also "help prevent underage drinking, the service can help keep impaired drivers off the road,” Kym Craven, Executive Director for the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives said.
