DoorDash, the technology company connecting consumers with local businesses, recently announced that new data shows California Dashers have seen increased earnings, flexibility, and benefits due to a landmark law. In 2023, Dashers in California earned an average of $36 per hour while on deliveries, representing a 41% rise from pre-Proposition 22 earnings in 2020.

According to a press release by DoorDash, Bay Area Dashers earned approximately $38 per hour while on deliveries in 2023. This figure is a significant 36% increase from their earnings in 2020. Sacramento Dashers experienced a similar trend, earning about $36 per hour - a 39% increase since 2020. Los Angeles Dashers earned around $35 per hour on deliveries in 2023, marking a 39% rise in their earnings compared to 2020. San Diego Dashers saw the most substantial growth, earning around $36 per hour - a 45% increase from their earnings in 2020.

Proposition 22 guarantees access to benefits such as a health care stipend for Dashers averaging 15 hours per week. However, according to another press release by DoorDash, the majority of Dashers - about 80% - already have health care coverage through other sources like full-time jobs or spouses. Only 11% utilized the stipend in the fourth quarter of 2023. Furthermore, the law ensures Dashers' flexibility and independence; with data showing that flexibility was cited as the main reason for dashing by about 95% of surveyed Dashers in California. Additionally, approximately 85% expressed a desire to remain independent.

Founded in 2013 and operating across more than twenty-five nations globally, DoorDash primarily focuses on local commerce infrastructure. According to the Overview webpage provided by DoorDash, it supports merchants adjusting to the convenience-driven market and serves as an employment source for job seekers. Simultaneously, it broadens consumers' access to community amenities.
