Moments ago, the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 22, affirming the will of nearly 10 million Californians who voted to deliver benefits and protections to drivers while preserving their independence. Whether drivers or couriers choose to work a few hours a week or more, their freedom to determine their schedules is now firmly established in California law, ending attempts to mandate an employment model they largely reject.

"Prop 22 is Working"

Since its enactment, Proposition 22 has provided tangible benefits for millions of drivers and couriers on platforms like Uber. According to Uber, the company has delivered over $1 billion in direct benefits. "Simply put, Prop 22 is making a real difference in people’s lives," reads a statement from Uber.

"Driving Forward"

Proposition 22 represents what can be achieved by listening to drivers and couriers. Policymakers are increasingly moving away from outdated discussions that present a binary choice between employment with benefits or independence without any protections. Instead, more policymakers worldwide—from New York State and Massachusetts to Australia and Brazil—are engaging with drivers and couriers to develop models that preserve their independence while introducing new benefits and protections. "We stand ready to ensure that progress continues," states Uber.
