DoorDash announced that the California Supreme Court's ruling upholds Proposition 22, allowing Dashers to maintain flexible working hours and access the benefits and protections provided by the law. Proposition 22 has been upheld in elections, by the California Court of Appeal, and now by the Supreme Court of California.

According to DoorDash, today’s ruling affirms the validity of Proposition 22, a measure approved by nearly 60% of California voters in 2020. This decision has backing from a diverse coalition, including workers, civil rights advocates, social justice groups, local businesses, and seniors who all supported the law’s passage. Despite facing opposition from influential special interests, the law has been upheld, reflecting the collective will of the voters. Proposition 22 provides significant benefits to Dashers and other app-based workers in California, with over 80% of Dashers expressing support for the law.

Proposition 22 guarantees access to benefits such as a health care stipend for Dashers averaging 15 hours per week. However, according to DoorDash's press release, the majority of Dashers—about 80%—already have health care coverage through other sources like full-time jobs or spouses. Only 11% utilized the stipend in the fourth quarter of 2023. Additionally, the law ensures Dashers' flexibility and independence; with 95% of surveyed Dashers in California citing flexibility as their main reason for choosing to dash over other income options and 85% expressing a desire to remain independent.
