Many homeowners aim for well-maintained lawns and often debate whether to edge before or after mowing. A recent survey of 175 homeowners revealed differing opinions on this topic.
The survey showed that 94 participants prefer edging before mowing, while 81 favor mowing first. Those who edge first believe it creates a clear boundary for mowing, with 38 respondents citing this reason. On the other hand, those who mow first argue it helps them determine the appropriate trimming height and reduces the risk of scalping, as noted by 35 respondents.
Advantages of mowing first include focusing on cutting grass accurately and avoiding obstacles from freshly edged borders. However, clippings may fall over edges, requiring additional clean-up. One respondent shared their concern: "The only reason I don't mow first is that I want to make sure I don't mow too close to my trees."
Proponents of edging first argue it sets a clear path for mowing and allows concentration on larger lawn areas afterward. However, debris from edging can require extra clean-up, and determining the correct trimming height may be challenging without prior mowing.
Ultimately, whether to edge before or after mowing depends on individual preferences and lawn characteristics. Both approaches have their pros and cons, but there is no definitive right or wrong way to manage lawn care effectively.
