Uber has announced via X that residents of Atlanta can now be matched with a Waymo autonomous electric vehicle through the Uber app. This collaboration combines Waymo's autonomous technology with Uber's platform to offer an all-electric, fully autonomous ride experience.
According to Uber Newsroom, Atlanta riders using UberX, Comfort, or Comfort Electric may now be matched with a Waymo fully autonomous all-electric Jaguar I-PACE at no additional cost. The initial rollout covers a 65-square-mile area including Downtown, Buckhead, and Capitol View. The company plans to expand the operating area further. Riders have the option to accept a Waymo vehicle or switch to a non-autonomous ride before dispatch, ensuring user choice and flexibility.
The announcement details that once matched, customers can unlock doors, open the trunk, and start their trip directly from the Uber app. This introduces new functionality while maintaining a familiar interface. Uber provides 24/7 customer support accessible both through the app and Waymo’s in-car screens to assist with any questions or issues throughout the journey. The service aims to offer a seamless and convenient experience. Atlanta customers eager for a Waymo ride can boost their chances by updating Ride Preferences in the app’s settings.
Uber Newsroom emphasized that safety is a central requirement for all autonomous vehicles operating on the Uber platform. Each autonomous vehicle is required to meet strict Safety Guidelines prior to launch. The company cites data showing that Waymo vehicles, with tens of millions of autonomous miles driven, have reduced traffic injuries in other markets. In Austin, where a similar Uber-Waymo program is active, customers have given their Waymo trips an average rating of 4.9 stars, reflecting high user satisfaction.
According to the official Uber Newsroom website, Uber is committed to reshaping mobility by integrating autonomous vehicles and human drivers to create a more sustainable, affordable, and reliable transportation system. The company’s partnership with Waymo is part of a broader mission to introduce electric and autonomous rides to major cities, supporting its vision of future urban mobility.
