Arlington, Va. will soon welcome Amazon's second headquarters as the project transforms from still images to an almost completed Metropolitan Park.

Amazon recently celebrated completing the top floor of construction at Metropolitan Park.

"Metropolitan Park, the first phase of our second headquarters' development in Arlington, Va., is taking shape as we celebrate an important milestone: the 'topping out,' or completion of the highest floor of the building," Brian Kenner, director, Public Policy, said in a press release this week. "So much has changed since we began construction more than two years ago in National Landing, and we can't wait to welcome Amazon employees and the Arlington community to Metropolitan Park in 2023."

Amazon has also committed $2.5 billion to bring more than 25,000 jobs to the area over the next decade as part of Met Park — a complex of two 22-story office buildings with 50,000 square feet of retail space for local small businesses and a 2-acre public park — which will be completed in 2023. The company has donated over $30 million to local nonprofits, community groups and small businesses on top of the more than $500 million in low-rate loans and grants for up to 2,300 affordable homes in the HQ2 region, Washington D.C. Business Daily previously reported.

"Since we announced Arlington as the site of HQ2 in 2018, we've been committed to building an inviting space that benefits our employees and the entire Arlington community through our focus on nature, sustainability and being great neighbors," the press release said. "The construction and design teams represent the diverse and vibrant economic impact this project is contributing to the local community. More than 4,800 skilled craftworkers and project managers are building Metropolitan Park and have devoted more than 2.2 million hours to this project. We appreciate their hard work and dedication."

A company that started in a garage in 1994 has since become the second-largest private employer in the U.S., with over 1 million employees throughout more than 45 states; and it has created more jobs than any other U.S. company over the last decade, Amazon reported.

With its commitment to sustainability, Met Park will be powered by electricity from a 120-megawatt solar farm being constructed in Pittsylvania County, Va., and is projected to be part of Amazon's goal of powering its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025.
