Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has announced a partnership with Uber for a holiday campaign during Impaired Driving Prevention Month. The initiative invites in-app donations from December 17 to January 3, with Uber matching the first $250,000 to fund prevention programs.
According to MADD, the organization has joined forces with Uber to launch a nationwide holiday campaign designed to turn awareness into action during one of the most dangerous times of year for impaired driving. The initiative enables Uber riders across the United States to make in-app donations to MADD, with the campaign running from December 17 through January 3. The organization explained that this collaboration builds on a long-standing partnership with Uber that uses innovation and advocacy to save lives, particularly during periods when alcohol-related crashes are most prevalent.
MADD’s campaign announcement states that Uber pledged to match the first $250,000 in rider donations made through the Uber app during the campaign period. The organization noted that this funding directly supports its national programs to prevent underage drinking, strengthen impaired driving laws, and provide free victim support services. By integrating the donation feature into Uber’s platform, MADD and Uber are expanding accessibility and empowering riders to participate in lifesaving efforts with just one click.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drunk driving claimed 4,759 lives during December months between 2018 and 2022, including 1,062 deaths in December 2022 alone. The agency’s report also found that 31% of fatal nighttime crashes involved impaired drivers, while 45% of fatal crashes between midnight and 2:59 a.m. were caused by drunk driving. MADD cited these findings to emphasize the urgent need for prevention, stressing that accessible ride alternatives like Uber play a measurable role in reducing alcohol-related fatalities.
According to its official website, Mothers Against Drunk Driving is a nonprofit organization founded in 1980 dedicated to eliminating drunk and drugged driving, supporting victims of these crimes, and preventing underage drinking. The organization reports that it has reduced drunk driving deaths in the United States by nearly 40%, saved more than 475,000 lives, and provided free support services to over one million victims and survivors through its 24/7 Victim Help Line. MADD’s enduring partnership with Uber reflects its continued focus on collaboration, advocacy, and technology-driven prevention strategies to build safer communities nationwide.
