Lyft Shared rides are making a comeback.

The rideshare giant recently revealed that Shared rides are returning to several areas, including San Francisco, San Jose, Denver, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Miami, according to a blog post from Lyft. Shared rides will be reintroduced in more cities throughout 2022. For now, Shared rides will be limited to two customers to ensure that the middle seat of the vehicle will remain open.

"As one of our most in-demand and affordable ride options, we look forward to gradually bringing Shared rides back," Ashwin Raj, Lyft's head of rideshare, said in the blog post. "We recognize the world has changed and our offerings need to evolve with it. That's why we are bringing Shared rides back in phases and listening to feedback along the way – all so we can continue to deliver the best possible service for our riders and drivers."

Lyft users who schedule a Shared ride in advance can save money and pay less than what they would for a standard ride, according to the blog post. The further in advance Lyft users book a Shared ride, the more money they can save. Lyft encourages riders in a Shared trip to be courteous of the other passenger and the driver by speaking quietly if talking on the phone and saving any food or drinks until after the ride.

Lyft operates in more than 350 cities across the U.S. and employs around 1.4 million drivers globally, according to Policy Advice. Over 23 million people around the world use Lyft. The company's market share has increased to 30%, which reflects an increase of 10% over the last three years.
