GoPuff recently made an announcement that Buffalo-area order delivery fees will be waived for two weeks after the mass shooting at a Buffalo grocery store.
On May 14, an 18-year-old man traveled more than three hours to a supermarket in Buffalo, N.Y., where he shot four people in the parking lot before entering the store and shooting nine others, an ABC News report said. Ten people were killed. The supermarket was located in a predominantly black neighborhood, and authorities believe the shooting was racially motivated.
“We are devastated by the shooting in Buffalo,” GoPuff said in a May 19 tweet. “Delivery fees for the next 2 weeks will be waived on ALL orders in the Buffalo area to help ensure the community has access to food and everyday essentials.”
Tops Friendly Market, where the shooting took place, is located in a food desert, a recent report from The Buffalo News said. The tragedy exacerbated some residents' challenges in finding food nearby, but organizations and members of the community have been working together to provide meals for those in need.
“Our community is grieving, but our community truly is the city of good neighbors and we have shown up for each other in ways that are incredible,” Catherine Roberts, president of the Resource Council of WNY, told The News. “We are Buffalo strong.”
GoPuff has expanded its operations from Philadelphia to more than 650 cities, a recent Business of Apps report said. More than 10 million people have downloaded the GoPuff app, and 2.6 million people are active users. Its revenue has increased from $200 million in 2019 to $340 million in 2020 to $1 billion in 2021.
