Uber said an investigation is underway following an alleged cybersecurity incident when a hacker shared evidence of a data breach.

After a hacker released proof that they had hacked the computer systems of the ride-hailing behemoth with journalists and security researchers, Uber stated that it was investigating a "cybersecurity issue."

“We are currently responding to a cybersecurity incident,” Uber’s communications team tweeted. “We are in touch with law enforcement and will post additional updates here as they become available".

A hacker obtained access to Uber's internal systems after hacking an employee's Slack account, and the company interacted directly with the attacker., The New York Times reported. Many IT organizations and startups utilize Slack, a workplace messaging tool, for daily interactions. According to various sources, Uber has now deactivated its Slack.

Uber stated that there was "no evidence that the incident involved access to sensitive user data” such as customers' travel histories. According to screenshots published on Twitter, the hacker also acquired access to Uber's Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud accounts, as well as confidential financial data.

"Internal software tools that we took down as a precaution yesterday are being restored this morning," Uber stated the next day. "All of our services are working, including Uber, Uber Eats, Uber Freight, and the Uber Driver app."

An Uber representative, Andrew Hasbun, refused to provide additional details on the event, according to CNN Business.

This is not the first time Uber has had a security compromise. In 2016, hackers took data from 57 million driver and passenger accounts, and Uber paid to conceal the incident.

Uber is said to have paid the hackers $100,000 to remove the data. In 2018, the firm agreed to pay $148 million in a settlement with attorneys general from 50 states and the District of Columbia.
