Effective August 1, DoorDash will introduce a $1.99 fee for certain long-distance orders and a $1.99 minimum service fee for orders from DashPass subscribers. This decision comes after the company faced ongoing financial losses due to Seattle's minimum pay ordinance, despite having added a $4.99 regulatory response fee. According to a press release by DoorDash, the company had delayed further fee increases for six months while the City Council debated a potential compromise bill aimed at reducing delivery costs. With the Council's decision not to advance a compromise, DoorDash stated it needs to adjust its fee structure to maintain operational sustainability.

On May 31, 2022, the Seattle City Council approved the App-Based Worker Minimum Payment Ordinance, SMC 8.37, which took effect on Jan. 13, 2024. This ordinance introduces significant protections for app-based workers, ensuring they receive a minimum compensation of either $0.44 per minute worked and $0.74 per mile traveled per offer or a minimum of $5 per offer. It mandates transparency by requiring platforms to disclose offer details upfront and provide workers with access to payment records.
